Hong Kong to issue first No 1 typhoon signal of year if tropical depression develops

Hong Kong’s weather forecaster has warned it may issue the No 1 typhoon signal if a tropical depression develops later on Thursday, the first such alert this year.

“A broad area of low pressure has formed in the central to northern part of the South China Sea, but it is still loosely organised,” the Hong Kong Observatory said.

“According to the present forecast, the area of low pressure may further intensify later today. If it develops into a tropical depression, the Observatory will issue the standby signal No 1.”
