The Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber rainstorm warning on Monday, as the city braced for another week of wet weather brought on by a trough of low pressure and a tropical cyclone.

Less than an hour before the signal was issued at 7.50am, the forecaster called for residents to remain alert as it warned widespread heavy rain could affect the city in a couple of hours.

It said a trough of low pressure would bring showers and squally thunderstorms to Guangdong on Monday and Tuesday.

“With a strong easterly airstream reaching the coast of Guangdong midweek this week, the trough of low pressure is expected to move southwards slightly, and bring unsettled weather to the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea in the middle and latter parts of this week,” the Observatory said.
