Hong Kong gets July 1 handover anniversary celebrations under way with flag-raising ceremony

Hong Kong marks the 27th anniversary of its return to Chinese rule on Monday, starting with a flag-raising ceremony and reception in the morning.

Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and senior officials are set to attend the flag-raising ceremony at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai before hosting the reception at the nearby Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Hongkongers and tourists alike can also enjoy free admission to museums and discounts offered by thousands of restaurants and retailers.

The day also marks the start of Lee’s third year in office, and he has vowed to focus on economic developments and improving people’s livelihoods during the rest of his term.
