Trump announces tariff payment deadline, says there will be no extensions

President Donald Trump announced that tariffs will start being collected on Aug. 1.

In a new social media post, Trump indicated that Aug. 1 is the firm date and that there will be no extensions.

“TARIFFS WILL START BEING PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025,” Trump wrote. "There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. In other words, all money will be due and payable starting AUGUST 1, 2025 - No extensions will be granted.”

His social media post comes as the president indicated on Monday evening that the Aug. 1 deadline is flexible, offering a mixed message to his previous comments.

“No, I would say, firm but not 100% firm if they call up and they say, would like to do something, a different way, whether it be open to that. But essentially, that's the way it is right now,” Trump said.

Earlier, Trump claimed all trade deals were “done."

“We've spoken to everybody we know ... I told you. We'll make some deals. But for the most part, we're going to send a letter,” Trump said.

He also signaled that the time for negotiations is over.

Trump says he's planning to send more weapons to Ukraine

President Donald Trump says he's planning to send more weapons to Ukraine.

"We have to -- they have to be able to defend themselves" Trump said during a White House dinner Monday night with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "They're getting hit very hard now. They're getting hit very hard. We're going to have to send more weapons, your defensive weapons, primarily."

Trump’s comments come after Monday's press briefing, where White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked to walk through the decision to halt weapons to Ukraine. Leavitt stated it was the result of a standard review by the Pentagon of all weapons and aid to all countries that the U.S. supports.

"When the Secretary of Defense took office, he directed the Pentagon to conduct this review to ensure that everything that's going out the door aligns with America's interests," Leavitt said. "So it's a pause to review to ensure that everything the Pentagon is pushing out there is in the best interest of our military and our men and women in uniform."

Trump sends mixed messages on trade deals and latest tariff deadlines

President Donald Trump gave mixed messages on Monday about trade and his new Aug. 1 deadline for tariffs to go into effect.

Asked by ABC News' Karen Travers about his administration's stated goal to reach 90 trade deals in 90 days, Trump -- two days ahead of the end of that 90-day time frame -- claimed that everything was "done" and seemed to equate the tariff letters his administration began sending out Monday to completed deals.

"It's all done," Trump said, adding, "We're going to say, welcome to the United States, if you'd like to participate in the greatest, most successful country ever."

Trump also signaled that the time for negotiations is over.

"As far as I'm concerned, we're done. We're sending out letters to various countries telling them how much tariffs they have to pay,” Trump said.

However, when asked earlier if the new Aug. 1 deadline the White House set for these tariffs to go into effect was a firm and final date, Trump indicated it was still flexible.

"I would say firm but not 100% firm,” Trump said.

When pressed on whether the tariff letters sent out today to several countries were final offers, Trump did not offer any clarity.

“More or less final offer,” Trump said. "We’re always subject to negotiate something that’s fair but we've talked to most of the countries and, pretty much, they've had their way for many, many decades, as you know, and it was time that we just wanted fairness."

So far, the administration has only announced a trade deal with Vietnam and framework agreements with China and the UK.
