Israel-Gaza war live updates: U.N. Security Council to reconvene on Gaza resolution

U.N. negotiators were unable to agree on language Tuesday on a new Security Council resolution. One new version, sponsored by the United Arab Emirates and seen by The Washington Post, eliminated the word “cease-fire,” which was present in a version offered Monday. Instead, it demanded an “urgent suspension of hostilities to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access.”
Yemen-based Houthi militants say they will not stop their “military operations” in the Red Sea after U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin unveiled a multinational naval coalition to protect commercial ships. “Our war is a moral war … no matter how many alliances America mobilizes, our military operations will not stop,” said Mohammed Albukhaiti, a member of the Houthi ruling council.
The Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem is petitioning the Israeli Supreme Court to allow international media “immediate access” to the Gaza Strip. Israel’s military has allowed some foreign reporters to embed with troops but hasn’t allowed access to areas where soldiers aren’t present. “Israel has blocked foreign press access to Gaza during some previous wars, but never before so long,” the FPA said.
At least 19,667 people have been killed in Gaza and 52,586 wounded since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. About 1,200 people were killed in Israel in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.
