The Israel Defense Forces’ announcement Friday that it had mistakenly killed three Israeli hostages in Gaza brought grief and outrage. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lamented what he called an “unbearable tragedy,” while the White House said it was “mourning with the families” after the “heartbreaking” news. In Tel Aviv, hundreds protested outside a military compound, local media reported. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has embarked on a trip to the Middle East, with stops in Israel, Qatar and Bahrain. He is expected to discuss with Israeli military leaders steps after an “eventual cessation of high-intensity ground operations and airstrikes,” a Department of Defense release said.
