Israel-Gaza war live updates: Israel to continue high-intensity campaign throughout January, U.S. officials say

The latest near-total internet blackout in Gaza has been going on for more than 60 hours, cybersecurity monitoring group NetBlocks said early Monday. This is the ninth such outage in the Strip since Oct. 7, it said, adding that the longest so far lasted for about 72 hours last month.
Over the weekend, tens of thousands of people in Tel Aviv attended a rally held by relatives of hostages Hamas took from Israel on Oct. 7, to mark the 100th day of their captivity and demand Israeli authorities secure their release. More than 100 hostages were freed during a pause in fighting in November and another 100 are believed to be alive in Gaza.
Israeli forces killed another journalist in Gaza, 27-year old camera operator Yazan al-Zwaidi, according to his employer, Egyptian network Al-Ghad TV. In response to a request for comment, Israel maintained that it does not purposefully target journalists. At least 82 journalists and media workers have been killed in the war, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a budget meeting Sunday that his government “will need to invest in a multiyear plan to free the State of Israel from dependence on external acquisitions for many items” related to defense. The budget included provisions for rebuilding communities attacked by Hamas on Oct. 7.
At least 23,968 people have been killed in Gaza and 60,582 wounded since the war began, the Gaza Health Ministry said Sunday. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
