  • Can Aston Villa still make the top eight?

Aston Villa are on the cusp of making the top eight, but they will need a mighty performance against Celtic at Villa Park.

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen are ahead of them on goal difference, and they are at home to Sparta Praha.

Villa could finish as high as 5th if Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Atalanta and Leverkusen all fail to win.

They will need Ollie Watkins to pop up with some goals, but is the Villa man's head in north London?

  • A table reminder

It's been four months since Matchday 1 of eight, so let's offer a refresher on how the revamped first stage of Europe's elite competition works.

Under the new system, the top eight automatically go through to the last 16 and are seeded with home advantage for the second leg, although there will be separate draws for home advantage for the following rounds.

Those finishing in ninth to 24th will play off next month to join the top eight in the last 16 in March.

The teams in ninth and 10th will be drawn against the sides in 23rd and 24th, with the sides finishing 11th and 12th, meeting teams ranked 21st and 22nd and so on.

  • Good evening and welcome to SunSport’s live blog of the final matchday of the Champions League league phase!

All 36 teams will feature tonight in a thrilling finale with so much still to be decided.

Liverpool and Barcelona are the only sides that are 100 per cent in the last 16, while Arsenal and Inter are all but through - with a draw for both teams enough to guarantee them a top-eight finish.

Aston Villa are on the cusp of the automatic progression spots, and a win over Celtic tonight will put them in the best position they can possibly be in.

The Villans will need one of Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan or Atalanta to not follow suit.

Manchester City can NOT qualify for a top-eight finish no matter what happens this evening.

Pep Guardiola’s men could be eliminated from the competition entirely if they fail to beat Club Brugge.

A win for the Premier League champions would see them secure a spot in the knockout play-offs and remain in the Champions League.
