Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organization, called the number of civilian deaths in Khan Younis “horrendous,” after U.N. officials said a blast killed 12 people sheltering at a U.N. training center in the southern Gaza city.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said he would not comment on a recording that appeared to show Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying he doesn’t “thank Qatar” for helping mediate a hostage release deal with Hamas last year. The recording triggered an angry response from Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari, who said Qatar was “appalled.”
The Gaza Health Ministry said at least 25,900 people have been killed and more than 64,110 injured in the enclave since the war began. Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack.
