China can’t be cut out of global economy, warns foreign minister

MUNICH — The world's second-largest economy can't be sliced out of world trade, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Saturday during an appearance at the Munich Security Conference.

The European Commission has been clear it aims to de-risk the EU's economies from over-dependence on China's subsidized supply chains on everything from electric cars to batteries and trains.

“More people have come to realize that the absence of cooperation is the biggest risk," Wang said in Munich. "Those who attempt to shut China out in the name of de-risking will make a historical mistake.”

Wang said the global economy is like "a big ocean that cannot be cut into isolated lakes," adding: "The trend toward economic globalization cannot be reversed."

On the sidelines of the Munich conference, Wang met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a meeting that was as "candid, substantive and constructive," according to a statement.

Wang also met with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjournet and the EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell.
