Changing weather is wreaking havoc on your skin – my expert tips to transition to spring, a free trick tightens pores
A SKINCARE expert has shared her tips to transition from winter to spring looking luminous.
Changing weather can wreak havoc on your complexion.
But follow her beauty hacks to avoid any breakouts.
One free trick tightens pores and another should be no surprise.
As we emerge from the winter months and into spring, we have to change our skincare routine accordingly, said Jillian Osborne.
She is a beauty expert with over 15 years of experience at the face yoga app Luvly.
There are all sorts of things to consider including fluctuating temperatures, pollution, and UV rays.
"As the climate shifts, it can be a real struggle to keep skin glowing," she said.
"Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can cause dryness and oiliness in equal measure."
But do not despair because there are ways of meeting these challenges head-on, and Jillian has shared some useful tips to help.
Some are standard beauty routines, but a gentle reminder never hurts.
Who isn't guilty of skipping the face-cleaning routine or forgetting to apply sunblock?
So here are some timely reminders.
SKIN SPRING CLEAN + DEEP CLEAN
We are used to grocery items having a use-by date.
But what about beauty treatments? They also have a limited shelf life.
"Check the expiration date and period-after-opening (PAO) symbol inside the jar," Jill said.
Makeup brushes matter too. Don't forget to include them in your spring clean.
Give them a gentle wash and allow them to air dry.
Top tip: ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C lose their effectiveness over time, so check they are in date.
FANCY A DIP?
Cold water therapy normally conjures images of plunging into ice holes in the northern wastelands.
But you don't have to go to those extremes for this beauty aid.
Your skin can benefit enormously by plunging your face into a bowl of icy water.
The cold water constricts blood vessels and tightens pores for a smoother appearance.
"This stimulates circulation, as well as your senses, leaving you with a healthy glow and full of energy," said Jillian.
Top tip: it can be a shock to the system so start by slowly lowering the shower's temperature.
TIME TO WATER YOUR FACE
Don't drop your rich moisturizers just yet. "They can address any residual dryness from winter," said Jillian.
Buzzwords in the world of skincare are still buzzing.
Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and ceramides lock in hydration and give your skin a natural glow.
There's a reason why these products are so popular among beauty fans.
"They mimic the body’s natural components, such as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronan, enhancing your skin’s natural glow by replenishing essential nutrients and promoting elasticity," she added.
Top tip: remember to hydrate from within, so drink plenty of water.
Dermatologist-approved anti-aging tips
Dermatologist Dr. Brendan Camp shared his dermatologist-approved tips with The U.S. Sun.
- Stop using tanning beds.
- Don't use sunscreen to contour your face.
- Wear driving gloves to protect your hands from the sun. He likes Coolibar Gannett UV Gloves UPF 50+, $15.99 to $39.
- Exercise, stick to a healthy diet, and get enough sleep.
- Don't drink excessively or smoke.
AGING ERASER
Certain exfoliants can help in the fight to keep signs of aging at bay.
Our expert suggested chemical exfoliants such as alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) dissolve dead skin cells.
"These exfoliants can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by promoting cell turnover and stimulating collagen production, resulting in a more youthful complexion," she said.
SUN SUN GO AWAY
This tip should come as no surprise to anyone.
Whether the sun is blazing down, or if it is hiding behind the clouds, you must always wear sunblock.
Jullian's advice is to apply SPF 30 or higher every two hours.
Top tip: don’t forget to protect your ears and decolletage.
RAINBOW FOODS
The winter months deprive us of essential sunshine to produce vitamin D, which can impact our skin condition.
Therefore, do yourself a favor and plan a menu full of rainbow foods, fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and oils.

Vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits can also help to combat winter-induced dullness.
"And add a sprinkle of nuts, seeds, and oils — full of vitamin E — which protects against oxidative damage," Jillian added.
