I live on an island – it costs me £50 to get anywhere decent… and the nightlife’s atrocious

A WOMAN has revealed the worst bits about living on an island - including how much it costs to get anywhere decent.

Jade lives on the Isle of Wight, and said that while it's "ultimately a great place", there are tonnes of things she would change about it.

"First thing, it's so expensive to get off the island," she said in a video on her TikTok page.

"We have to get a ferry over to the mainland - Portsmouth, Southampton.

"The other day I had to use the hovercraft and I kid you not, the price of the ticket to come back the next day was like £48.

"I was in shock."

It's only a 10-minute journey as well, and while there's an 'Islander discount', it was still £38.

But "you have no choice but to pay it".

"If you wanna get off the island, you have to pay and that's where they get you," she admitted.

"You're trapped!"

An added disadvantage is that the ferries are only every hour, so if you miss one, you have to wait for the next one.

"Most of them don't run past midnight" either, which is difficult if Jade wants to go for a night out in Portsmouth or Southampton.

"It just really limits you," she said.

And don't even think about having a night out on the island.

"The night life here is absolutely atrocious," she moaned.

"There's ONE club - I kid you not, one club.

"I mean I had fun when I was younger but you don't really tend to go there the older you get."

There's only one bar that Jade will go to, as she said it's loads of fun with a ball pit and "those cute little girly signs".

And the other entertainment on the island - such as Blackgang Chine, the oldest theme park in the UK.

"But even that has lost its charm because the people that run it or whatever, they've just ruined so many things about it," Jade said.

Another disadvantage of living on the Isle of Wight is that "aesthetic clothes shopping does not exist here".

"We have New Look and TK Maxx," she said.

"That's basically it. We did actually used to have Topshop before it closed down.

"And we also had H&M. Don't know why that closed down, it was the most decent one.

"Obviously they take everything good from this island."

On the coffee front, they used to have a Starbucks, which closed down, and there's a Costa but not a drive through one.

"Another thing I'm not obsessed with is anytime you leave the house you are more than likely to see at least one person you know know of," she said.

"Cause this island is tiny and you're always bumping into people or in a supermarket and you recognise someone, you got your head down cause you just don't wanna talk to them.

"That doesn't just happen in the towns. You could drive half an hour and you still see someone that you know of."

People in the comments section were quick to weigh in on Jade's video, with one writing: "I feel your pain x10 living in jersey!"

"Try living on the Isle of Man lol, boat doesn’t work and costs +£100," another said.

"Really feel this lol, living in jersey is such a struggle, hate having to fly everywhere," a third commented.
