I couldn’t afford a house so live in a shed in my mum’s garden – it looked gross at first but I’m saving so much

A MUM has revealed that she moved into the shed at the bottom of her mums garden, after being unable to afford a house.

Amy Hernandez lives in the converted shared with her baby daughter.

She shared an insight into her renovation process via a video posted to her TikTok channel.

When she first started the process, the shed looked run down, with paint peeling off the walls and rubbish littering the shed walls.

She set to work straight away, scrubbing the windows, painting the walls and tiling the floors.

The single mum built cabinets and even created a second floor to the shed, which can be accessed through a hatch in the ceiling.

Amy has now decked out the shed with a large double bed and a desk for her to work at.

It is decorated with fairy light and hanging vines, which give the place a cosy, homely feel.

There is a TV attached to the wall and a large wardrobe on one side of the shed, where she stores her and her daughters' clothes.

However, the shed does not have a toilet, and Amy revealed that she has to run to her mum's house in the dark at night if she needs the loo, something which she admitted she finds terrifying.

Amy revealed that she has saved loads of money from living in the shed and is now able to pay all of her bills on time.

Her TikTok, which was posted under the username @Iaimzz, has likely left many open-mouthed, as it has racked up over 2.8 million views on the video sharing platform.

TikTok users raced to the videos' comments section to share their thoughts on the shed home.

One user said: "This is a good idea.

"No rent and you're in your own space with your child".

Another user added: "I did this at my parents house.

"I loved being away from the drama. It was my cave."

A third user added: "It looks so cosy and beautiful".

Living in a shed is a great way to save cash for a house, if you want to move out but don't yet have the funds to be able to afford one.

As the cost of living crisis continues to bite, more and more adults are struggling to get on the property ladder and are choosing to live in their family home for longer.

The 2021 census revealed that over half of people aged 23 and under still live with their parents.

The average price of a house in the UK was £285,000 as of March 2023, and this rises to a whopping £735,254, which is completely unaffordable for many.

Moreover, research from the Resolution Foundation found that the average first time buyer deposit tripled from 5 per cent of the property price in 1989 to 15 per cent in 2019.

This means that buyers have to save for far longer and use up a larger percentage of their earnings to get on the property ladder.

Recent research by property site Zoopla found that 42 per cent of adults under 40 who do not already own homes have given up, due to the astronomical cost of buying a property.
