I’m a pet expert…‘hidden’ winter syndrome could seriously harm pets as weather gets warmer & how walks make it worse

Pet pro Tony Buonaiuto, from Good Doggy Treats, has advised owners against a "danger" that could affect your dog's physical activity.

What could seem like simple laziness in your pet, could be in fact winter doldrum syndrome.

This psychological condition is the temporary feeling of sadness experienced after long periods of cold weather and less sun.

Although it is common among humans, the expert said pets can also be influenced by this seasonal change.

The loss of sunlight and the rainy days will cause your furry friend mood changes and lack of physical activeness.

Taking to TikTok, Tony warned: "Danger for your dog, spring is just around the corner and they have winter doldrum syndrome which means they've been laying around all winter and not doing anything.

"Your dog might very ready, but he might not be in the best physical shape."

Symptoms include loss of appetite, low energy, excessive barking and a general sadness throughout the days.

Luckily, Tony has revealed how can pet parents beat the winter doldrum syndrome for when the warmer days arrive.

He said the key is to focus on keeping your dog healthy by incorporating outdoor activities to their routine.

But he warned owners shouldn't push their pets to their limits.

Instead, he recommends to start with easy exercise routines and increase gradually.

Tony added: "Take it easy, long walks maybe not so much. Start small [and then] grow. Dogs love to be outside but you could over-exercise them as well."

Other experts recommended to have a healthy diet and avoid junk food.

Gerard Lovell, MD at Forthglade explained: “All pet owners want their dogs to be happy, but it seems the winter months can really have a negative impact on our four legged friends.

“Those of us who suffer from winter blues know how important it is to resist junk food and keep our diets healthy, and the same goes for our pets.

It comes another pet specialist published a list of potentially toxic cleaning products for cars and offers pet-safe alternatives for spring.

Meanwhile, a dog expert revealed the breed most families need to steer clear of.

What is winter doldrum syndrome?

THE feeling of sadness and lethargy that some experience during winter can also affect your furry friend.

The symptoms can include:

  • More barking
  • Increase in aggression and destructive behaviour
  • Less playfulness
  • More hours spent sleeping
  • Weight loss and reduced appetite
  • Increased shedding or loss of fur

How to treat the winter blues:

  • Try taking your dog outside more every day.
  • Try placing your pet's bed under a skylight or close to a window to help take advantage of what little light there is.
  • Nutrition also plays a big part, and poor diet can be directly linked to lethargy and depression within canines.
  • Play games inside the home to stimulate the dog.
  • No matter the size or shape, the garden also offers a great outdoor space for your dog to get some natural sunlight.
