SHOPPERS are racing to get their hands on a 35p item that removes window mould "in one hour".

Window sills can be problem areas due to higher levels of condensation as temperatures drop and pesky leaks around seals - but this hack could help.

The stubborn black stuff can be a nightmare to clean - and if left untreated can even become a health hazard.

As part of their winter campaign, the NHS has also warned that damp and mould makes you more likely to have respiratory infections, allergies and asthma.

Jade Oliver, showroom stylist at Express Bi-Folding Doors told Express one of the best ways to avoid mould is by leaving windows open for a few hours.

"Do this while you are out or in a different room and it can make a huge difference," she said.

If it's too frosty to leave your windows open for long, just 10 minutes can make a positive impact.

It is also important to adjust any curtains or blinds that might block airflow against the glass.

The expert also warned homeowners not to apply a common household product people frequently use to eradicate mould.

She said: “Bleach doesn’t work so don’t use it, however white vinegar left for around an hour will.

“Use a scrubbing brush or even a cloth soaked in warm, soapy water and that should do the trick.

“Remember to always wear gloves and a mask when getting rid of mould.”

White vinegar is an effective cleaning agent because it contains something called acetic acid.

This a natural and non-toxic alternative to strong chemicals found in bleach.

Tesco sells the white vinegar at just 0.35p for a 568ml bottle - and it can be used for a range of cleaning purposes.

Mrs Hinch fans swear by the miracle product to get rid of smudges and dirt on glass windows.

One cleaning expert wrote: “Vinegar in a bowl of hot water, use this to clean the window, then wipe dry with kitchen paper.”

She explained the mixture should be half warm water and half white vinegar.

The Mrs Hinch fan added that she uses two Minky green glass cloths – one for the vinegar solution and one dry one to wipe the windows down.

It was also revealed distilled vinegar can be used to get rid of mould around the seals and drawers of your washing machine.

Meanwhile, John Cutts, a glass expert at MeandMyGlass.co.uk, suggested another helpful product to tackle mould.

“Mould develops when there is excess moisture in the air which is why investing in a dehumidifier can help eliminate the problem," he explained.

“Having them placed on a windowsill can effectively absorb the moisture and prevent the spread from escalating.”
