In her viral video, an Instagram user who goes by Madame Sweat (@madamesweat) explained that most people don't clean their shower heads often enough.

She warned her audience that wiping down their shower heads once a year isn't enough.

The Instagrammer pointed out that the "small dark damp holes [become] loaded with bacteria" over time.

According to Madame Sweat, you should avoid using bleach to tackle this problem.

"It seems like it’s logical but it will increase the bacteria count by three times," she explained.

She revealed that there is a "super easy" alternative that doesn't even involve removing your shower head.

Using one cup of water and one cup of vinegar, you can tackle the bacteria build-up.

"Vinegar is very acidic and will help all that limescale come off," she told her followers.

To minimize the mess caused, Madame Sweat suggested filling a plastic bag with the mixture.

She placed the bag over her shower head and secured it in place overnight.

This allowed the shower head time to soak in the homemade cleaning solution.

The experts at Health Line also cited the ingredient's acidity as making it an effective cleaner.

"Its high acidity can break down stubborn buildup of soap, dirt, and scum," they said.

"It contains 5% acetic acid, a compound that can dissolve dirt, debris, and grime."

The professionals warned that while vinegar can be used for cleaning, it is not an effective disinfectant.

Cleaning tips to elevate your home

Realtor Stephanie Booth shared her go-to cleaning tips with The U.S. Sun.

  • Use dish soap and baking soda to scrub your stovetop and kitchen cabinets.
  • Clean your carpets, dishwasher, and under appliances as soon as you move in.
  • Make a crockpot potpourri of sliced lemons, vanilla, a sprig of rosemary, and two cups of water.
  • Fluff your pillows but don't worry about karate-chopping them.

"Vinegar can’t kill all germs," they warned their readers.

Instagram users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.

"Yup. I do this. And it works. Shower and sinks," wrote one impressed viewer.

"That’s exactly what I’ve done all my life. Learned it from my grandmother," said another follower.

"I tried the bag full of vinegar. Came out sparkling. A brush is good for in-between," commented a third person.
