Ambulance was originally released in 2022 and directed by Michael Bay, who is best known for his work on Pearl Harbor and the Transformers franchise. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II of The Matrix Resurrections as Will Sharp, Spider-Man: Far From Home actor Jake Gyllenhaal as Danny Sharp and Baby Driver’s Eiza González as Cam Thompson.

The movie, which has been dubbed an "acting masterclass" kicks off with Will going to his adoptive brother Danny for a loan to cover his sick wife’s medical bills.

“A charismatic career criminal, Danny instead offers him a score: the biggest bank heist in Los Angeles history: $32 million. With his wife’s survival on the line, Will can’t say no,” the film’s official synopsis teases.

It continues: “But when their getaway goes spectacularly wrong, the desperate brothers hijack an ambulance with a wounded cop clinging to life and ace EMT Cam Thompson onboard.

“In a high-speed pursuit that never stops, Will and Danny must evade a massive, city-wide law enforcement response, keep their hostages alive, and somehow try not to kill each other, all while executing the most insane escape L.A. has ever seen.”

Ambulance initially premiered in April 2022 after several delays. It grossed $52.8 million worldwide, but received mixed reviews from critics who collectively awarded it 68% on Rotten Tomatoes

Most criticisms were about the film’s 136 minute run time. But now a new audience is finding it on Netflix and they have nothing negative to say about it.

As a result of copious rave reviews, the movie is sitting at fourth place in Netflix’s UK film charts (as of January 31).

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, to recommend the film, one viewer said: “Ambulance on Netflix is a TOP film, it’s actually hilarious with great action scenes.”

“Ambulance was such a good movie on Netflix omg 11/10,” another raved.

A third praised: “If you like drama and action, watch Ambulance on Netflix.”

While a fourth added: “Michael Bay at his best.”

“Ambulance on Netflix is a winner. Great high octane chaotic action movie! Should have guessed it’s a Michael Bay film,” a fifth Netflix fan agreed.

“Ambulance on Netflix is [fire emoji]. Literally non-stop action,” added another.

But, Ambulance gaining rapid traction on Netflix this week has left some viewers wondering how it slipped through the cracks the first time around.

One fan said: “I never understood why Ambulance wasn’t a bigger movie. I saw it in theatres and thought Hollywood just made its next action hit, but it’s like nobody saw it. And now Netflix having this Cult-Like post theater DVD home media effect lets me know I’m not crazy.”

As the title implies, most of the movie is spent inside the ambulance, which is a notably small space.

Star Jake, 43, recalled this being the hardest thing about filming the action flick

“If there are three actors in that space, it means there are probably six people shooting it,” he explained to Screen Rant.

“There were a lot of people kind of squished in getting knocked around. And a lot of times, as we’re driving down the street at 50-60 miles an hour doing a scene, bumping into things and knocking yourself,” he added.

But luckily, Jake was able to take breaks from filming inside the ambulance, as he can often be seen poking his upper body out to engage in several “thrilling” gunfights.
