The tiny underground lake hidden inside an English cave that holidaymakers can only visit by boat

HOLIDAYMAKERS in the UK have been raving about an "amazing" English cavern - it has its very own lake that can only be reached by boat.

With the half-term holidays just around the corner, parents will be looking for things to do to keep their little ones entertained.

One place that could do just that is a little-known tourist attraction in the Hope Valley in the Peak District National Park.

While originally operating as a lead mine in the 18th century, Speedwell Cavern has been welcoming tourists for many years.

Holidaymakers wishing to explore the English cavern will need to climb down 106 steps to reach a small jetty.

Once at the jetty, visitors will be asked to board a small boat, which is manned by a local guide.

As the boats take visitors along the underground canal, tour guides provide details about the cavern's history.

The canal will split in two at the Halfway House to allow boats to pass on either side, and they will continue onto the Bottomless Pit - the cavern's underground lake.

After visitors are given a moment to enjoy the lake, the boat will then return to the jetty.

Visitors are encouraged to wear flat shoes and warm clothing as temperatures in the cave sit at around 9C, and they will be asked to wear hard hats too.

There's also an on-site gift shop where holidaymakers can purchase souvenirs.

Boat tours typically last between 40 to 65 minutes, with entry tickets costing £18.75 for a full-paying adult and £11 for a child under the age of 15.

Speedwell Cavern is a 45-minute drive from Sheffield, and it's a 70-minute drive from Manchester.

The attraction has been praised by holidaymakers on TripAdvisor, with a 4/5 star rating from more than 1,800 reviews.

One person wrote: "I had an amazing experience down in the cave. My tour guide Bart was very knowledgeable about the history of the cavern, and he brought comedy to the tour."

Another person added: "A great thing to do whilst in the Peak District."

A third person wrote: "A great trip and fab experience, with an excellent tour guide and friendly smiley staff. We spent just the right amount of time in the cavern."

Other nearby attractions include the Blue John Cavern, a group of illuminated limestone caves with marine fossils, and the Treak Cliff Cavern.

The caverns are located within the Peak District National, which was named one of the most beautiful national parks in the UK by luggage storage company Bounce.

Not only does the central England park cover 500 miles, but it also appeared in more than 2million Instagram posts and has had more than 270million views on TikTok.

This isn't the only cave that's been praised by holidaymakers in recent years.

The Carnglaze Caverns are nestled 60m below ground, and they were originally created by a group of local miners over 300 years ago.

There are three separate caverns to explore, including one that has since been flooded and transformed into an underground lake.
