China’s Xi Jinping meets Jake Sullivan amid talk of another summit with Biden
China’s President Xi Jinping is meeting US national security adviser Jake Sullivan in Beijing, talks that could pave the way for a much-anticipated third summit between the Chinese leader and his American counterpart Joe Biden.
Sullivan is the first White House national security adviser to visit the Chinese capital in eight years. He is set to wrap up his three-day mission aimed at managing the two countries’ frayed relations on Thursday.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Sullivan held talks with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi, where they discussed a wide range of issues including the Ukraine war, Washington’s trade tariffs, Taiwan, and the South China Sea.
Sullivan’s visit – just months before the US presidential election – is largely viewed as laying the groundwork for another summit, with speculation that Biden could make a trip to China before he steps down in January.
