I’m a hairstylist & 4 cuts are best for disguising thinning hair – a quick fix can create the illusion it’s thicker
THINNING locks can be disguised by choosing specific cuts that also reduce tension, revealed a hairstylist.
She shared four of the best hairstyles to adopt when experiencing shedding.
Megan Brooks is a professional stylist at IHS Hair Replacement London, specializing in hair pieces and custom-made wigs.
She revealed that thinning tresses don’t have to sacrifice style while regrowing hair.
SIDE SWEPT
She recommended swapping a middle part for a side style to add “instant volume” to frail hair.
“You can flip the hair from one side to the other as you wish to emphasize volume on the area which most needs it creating the illusion of full, thicker hair,” she said.
According to Hair.com, it’s best to use a rat tail comb on damp hair to form the part.
A blow dryer on a medium setting should then be used to create definition, before taming flyaways with a smoothing serum.
CURTAIN BANGS
Brooks said a “classic” option is cutting hair short and adding curtain bangs to create the appearance of more density.
She revealed blunt ends can help to create the illusion of fuller and thicker locks.
“Longer hair tends to look thinner because the weight of the hair pulls it down, making it appear flatter,” she said.
“Try adding bangs to add volume and dimension to the hair by framing the face and creating layers.”
LONG A-LINE BOB
The hairstylist said people who love length should try an a-line bob or lob (long bob) for a bounce.
“This will give the illusion of thicker hair, especially when styled with soft waves or curls,” she said.
“This style adds volume and dimension to thin hair while maintaining a trendy look.”
Margot Robbie and Jordan Dunn are among the celebs who’ve confidently embraced the hairstyle.
“A classic bob should sit above your shoulders and a lob would be anything that hits your shoulders down to your collarbone,” celeb hairstylist Jen Atkins told Elle.

WISPY LAYERS
Brooks said people with thinning hair should switch from heavy layers to a wispy alternative for added texture and volume.
She said the style is “light, airy, and seamless” while adding shape and movement.
Wispy layers are most flattering for people with a square, rectangular, or heart-shaped face, according to L’Oreal Paris.
THINNING TRESSES CAUSES
Thinning hair can occur at any age and take different forms, such as minor thinning on the crown of the head or complete baldness.
Dr Bhavini Shah from LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor said it may be triggered by various factors.
Among them are female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, stress, menopause, poor diet, and using harsh hair products.
She advised being mindful when bleaching and perming hair, as well as reading the label on the products used.

“Ingredients like sulfates, parabens, and formaldehyde can irritate the scalp and weaken the hair, making it more prone to falling out,” she said.
“Opt for products that are gentle on your hair and scalp, and try to avoid over-bleaching.”
