Up your salmon intake

Regularly consuming certain nutrients and foods can make a difference when it comes to having thick, lush strands.

“Salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, a key nutrient for healthy hair.”

Get ‘eggy’ with it

You may have heard of people applying egg yolk as a hair mask – yes really!

Applying egg yolk topically to your scalp can help infuse the root of your hair with vitamins.

This means that the new hair may grow out stronger and be less prone to breakage and shedding.

When your hair doesn’t fall out as much, it becomes fuller.

A box of 15 eggs from Asda can cost £1.99, which means one only costs 13p.

Less can be more

Using the wrong type of conditioner for your hair, or too much of it, can weigh the hair down and make it feel flatter, which in turn will make it appear thinner.

I would avoid using hair masks regularly (once a week max) and don’t opt for a heavy conditioner, to help maintain volume and body.

Flip your parting

An easy and quick volumising trick is to change your parting and flip your hair over to the other side. It sounds simple – but it really does work!

A middle parting makes hair look flatter – whereas, flipping it over is an easy way to add more volume and body.

Wash your hair before blow drying

A big bouncy blow dry looks best on freshly washed hair. I then like using the

Bellissima Air Wonder 8 in 1 Hot Air Styler (£129.99, bellissimaitalia.co.uk) as it has lots of barrel brush attachments to help create the XXL volume.

Dry shampoo is your best friend

Dry shampoo can also give you an instant boost of volume, as it usually contains powders like starches and minerals to increase the friction between strands and absorb oil, this then helps to create volume.

Say goodbye to flat strands by spritzing dry shampoo under sections of hair at the roots, then lightly brushing through.

The 4 stages of the hair growth cycle

Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growtn cycle are: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen

Anagen Phase: Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed.

During the Anagen Phase, hair grows around half an inch a month [about six inches a year], and faster in the summer than in winter.

This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.

Catagen Phase: Following the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair.

Approximately three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any time and it lasts for around 10 days.

Telogen Phase: The third stage of your natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.

An estimate of 10-15 percent of your hairs are in the Telogen Phase at any given moment.

The Telogen Phase lasts around three months or 100 days.

Exogen Phase: The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out.

Now the whole process begins again.

Backcombing makes a comeback

The age-old technique of backcombing comes in handy when trying to create the illusion of thicker roots, however avoid using a comb (the old-school way).

Instead, I’d recommend getting a mixed bristle brush and hold the hair up, then push the brush downwards just behind the roots at the crown.

Scrub up

Our hair follicles can often get blocked up by the likes of dandruff, product build-up and dead skin – all of which can in turn stunt hair growth and make our hair appear limper.

So, it’s important to keep on top of your hair and scalp health

I’d recommend using a scalp scrub once a week to help keep your hair follicles clear and clean.

Massage your scalp

Massage your scalp in the shower either with a scalp massager or your fingertips, this may increase hair thickness by stretching the cells of hair follicles, which can in turn, help to stimulate the follicles to produce thicker hair.

Include spinach in your diet

Spinach is a healthy green vegetable loaded with beneficial nutrients like folate, iron, and vitamins A and C, which can help support your hair growth and keep your hair looking thick and luscious.
