Police and emergency services said one passenger was found dead at the scene.

Cops believe a boulder barrelled into the track and forced the train off.

The train operator said 90 tickets were sold for the ride but around 50 to 70 people were onboard at the time.

Live TV showed several carriages of the train sliding down a hill before it became caught in the trees near a large body of water.

The train had been heading towards the city of Bodoe from Trondheim in central Norway.

Shaken passengers revealed their onboard account of the horrifying incident.

Ingvart Strand Mølster revealed how he was tossed within his carriage during the ordeal.

"I never understood why we braked like that, then I was suddenly thrown into a wall," Mølster told news site Dagbladet.

"I ended up in the middle of the cart where the bins are.

"People were lying on top of each other there."
