I don’t buy my kids Christmas presents, they get items from around the house that I’ve wrapped up – it’s more special

ALTHOUGH Christmas is all about spending time with your loved ones, many of us are finding it incredibly stressful.

That's why one mum, Angela Jackson, has made the decision to go gift-free this festive season - and in fact, she's done this for two years now.

Although the mum-of-five, from the USA, admitted that some may find the move ''controversial'', especially as the kids still live at home, her family is always ''looking forward'' to the thrifty Chrismtas.

Rather than stressing over expensive prezzies, the Jackson clan opt for a more different approach - one that revolves around ''reconnecting as a family'' with very little technology around.

To accomplish this, Angela revealed on YouTube, she will simply find random items around their home and wrap them in gift paper.

''I think that ultimately we kind of go back to the idea that there's an expectation, there's just something about Christmas - that you just need to make it magical and you need to make it special, not just for the kids but for anybody that is celebrating with you.

''It just puts a lot of extra stress on us,'' she explained in her channel, Arrow Hill Cottage.

''A lot of the times we see that there is a trendy gift that is offered and we want to make sure that our loved one gets that special gift.

''Or we see a specific decorating style that is popular and we want to be the ones to do that,'' the mum-of-five shared her thoughts on the Christmas mania.

It was around two or so years ago when the Jacksons went gift-free - and since then, not only has there been no constant worry about the 'perfect present' but also finding ''the right clothes'' or ''finding the perfect meal''.

Before the big day, Angela will go on a mini ''scavenger hunt'' around the property and see what she can find - whether it's a puzzle or a cookie set.

''I'm looking for things that can represent an activity that our family will do together on Christmas.

''I'm going to then wrap those items up and we'll put them under the tree and on Christmas Day when we're celebrating and having our family time we will open up these presents randomly.

''It's just really fun that way, it kind of has that surprise element to it.''

As well as being big on puzzles, Angela revealed that the kids enjoy watching movies - which is why one Christmas she also wrapped up some popcorn to enjoy on the couch, as well as a pair of mittens.

This 'gift' was totally free - as it was simply heading outdoors for a walk to get some fresh air or build a snowman, or go ice-skating, she added.

Even old pieces of Lego have been wrapped up in the past - the thrifty mum reckoned these would be great for making Lego gingerbread houses to determine whose DIY build is the best.

''I just need to find a clue that relates to it, wrap it up and put it under the tree and it'll keep the kids guessing until Christmas Day.''

However, despite facing some criticism by those who reckon their families would never agree to spend the festive period like this, Angela explained there was a good reason behind this money-saving approach.

''Spending time together as a family gets more and more difficult the older our children get.

''We have one in high school already, one in junior high and then the other kids... They're all growing up so fast.

''Setting aside this day [...] to really just have some quality time together as a family is just really important to us.''

With the festive season around the corner, Angela reminded: ''You may remember a gift, but you will cherish a memory.''
