ALDI might have been crowned the 'the cheapest supermarket' for the third year running in 2023, but one shopper has contested their accolade after visiting her local branch.
Leah Nicole, a woman from Kent, claimed that in her local Aldi, she feels she barely gets any items for her money.
According to Which?, the discount chain was also named the UK’s cheapest supermarket of the month for December – totalling Aldi’s accolades to 11 wins with Which? in 2023.
The prices of groceries and everyday household essentials such as bread, milk and eggs, were compared in the latest annual survey from Which? and Aldi came out top.
It comes after December, when Which? found Aldi to be a whopping £20 cheaper than the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose and £10 cheaper than both Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
However, despite this, savvy saver and food and lifestyle content creator Leah, was keen to disagree with the claims.

Sharing her thoughts on social media, Leah uploaded her clip with the caption ‘Budgeting, meal ideas?! Are you interested because something has to change. This cost-of-living and prices going up is mad. I need to try and make some cuts somewhere!’
I must be doing something different, I get five meals a week, all the ingredients, stuff for packed lunches etc for £50-60 at Aldi.
TikToker and Aldi shopper
As she sat in her car, fuming after her shopping trip, she claimed: “£78 I’ve just spent in Aldi on basically nuff all.
“I am honestly really p****d off with how much that has cost me, when all I’ve got is dinner, which is a roast dinner, packed lunch bits that will last two, maybe three days.
“Granted, I did get top-up bits, like milk, bread, cheese, a bottle of Pepsi Max and some fabric conditioner. Nothing crazy.
“I stuck to exactly what I needed and what the f**k?!
“I cannot carry on spending that much money on my food shopping. That’s not even cleaning products, deodorants or anything like that, that I’ve still got to buy this week.
“It’s literally like a day’s dinner and packed lunch bits, a few top-up items.”
Leah then reflected on the current cost-of-living crisis, as she added: “People are in worse off situations than I am. I know I’m not the only one in this position, and I cannot have another month like this where I have completely sawed through money, and I haven’t even bought myself anything.
“It’s nothing extravagant whatsoever. It’s f*****g expensive," she claimed.
“Being an adult right now is s**t.”
Leah later claimed: “I used to be able to do a full on huge shop for £80. Honestly my shopping has tripled!”
The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @whodareswins_, has clearly left many shocked, as it was shared just 20 hours ago, but has quickly amassed a staggering 106,500 views.
Many social media users agreed with Leah’s claims and shared where they prefer to go to get their groceries.
One person said: “I very rarely go into Aldi anymore as I feel it’s the supermarket that has increased its prices the most! M&S/Sainsbury’s is the way forward for me.”
Another added: “Honestly may as well shop in M&S with Aldi prices at the moment!!!! They’ve gone up so much.”
A third commented: “We stick to Asda now, Aldi prices are shocking now.”
Whilst someone else claimed: “I’ve moved from Aldi to Asda now… there’s not much difference in cost, and I get better quality.”
However, not everyone agreed with Leah’s claims and they still recommend shopping at Aldi.
One Aldi fan penned: “I must be doing something different, I get five meals a week, all the ingredients, stuff for packed lunches etc for £50-60.”
A second chimed in: “I actually find Aldi better!! I spent £84 on Friday, but that was including Formula, Nappies and three books for my son. Actual food was about £65 and we get all sorts - fresh, frozen, veg, fruit. I love Aldi compared to everywhere else!”
Meanwhile, a third money-saving whizz wrote: “I shop in Aldi and swap things out for what's on offer to save money. I go for reductions!”
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be named the Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for a third year running.
"We are committed to providing shoppers with the best quality products at the lowest prices and it’s great to have that officially recognised by a highly respected consumer champion, such as Which?.
