I haven’t bought any clothes for seven YEARS – I even wear other people’s used undies, I don’t get why there’s a stigma

A WOMAN has shared how she hasn't bought herself any clothes in seven years - including socks and underwear.

She explained that she decided to give up buying clothes on her journey to mindful spending, and has managed to keep her ban going for an incredible seven years.

"Today marks seven years without buying a single piece of clothing!" she wrote over the top of her Instagram Reel.

"Yes - that includes underwear and socks."

She went on to admit people always ask how she managed for seven years without buying herself any knickers or socks.

"For the first few years, socks and underwear weren’t an issue - air drying your clothing can make them last a whole lot longer," she wrote.

"The easiest to say yes to was hand me down socks - they go in the washer and dryer and come out clean.

"Really not the big deal we pretend it to be!"

While her mum bought her a "five pack of underwear" a few years into her clothes buying ban, she started to get "more comfortable with accepting hand me downs" as time went on.

"Someone I knew in the neighborhood was giving away some clothing, including a few pairs of opened - but unworn - pairs of underwear," she continued.

"That felt like an easy win, so I said yes."

Soon afterwards, her daughter had some clothes she wanted to get rid of, including "some lightly worn underwear".

"Since by then I was out as a complete weirdo when it came to clothing, she asked if I wanted them instead of throwing them away. I said yes," she wrote.

"And like everything else I receive secondhand, they went in the washer and dryer on high.

"And then I wore them."

She added that she doesn't understand the stigma that comes with second hand underwear.

"My son wore secondhand cloth nappies," she said.

"Why would underwear for me be any different? If I could get poop out of nappies, I could wear secondhand undies.

"Instead of adding to the landfill, they have an extended life with me.

"It’s really not that complicated."

People in the comments section were quick to weigh in, with one writing: "Love that you’re breaking the stigma around used underwear!

"Why are people so weird about it??"

"I also used second hand cloth nappies for my son," another added.

"A gently used swimsuit or undies doesn't phase me. Wash and dry on high heat.

"Hang for a day or two in bright sunlight, voila ready to wear!"

"Love this and I appreciate your openness in sharing," a third commented.

"Time makes a lot of things less weird!"

"I don’t know if I'd be comfortable having that level of commitment, but this is a great example to encourage me to buy less and borrow more," someone else wrote.
