City leader John Lee Ka-chiu on Tuesday also struck a positive tone about Hong Kong’s future, saying opportunities were still outweighing challenges ahead.

“Hong Kong is at a critical period of economic transformation,” Lee said at a National Day reception to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. The event was attended by local and Beijing officials, as well as representatives of different sectors.

“We must adapt to our circumstances, continuously reform, recognise and seek change, break through bottlenecks, address shortcomings, remove obstacles while consolidating and enhancing Hong Kong’s advantages.”

Lee emphasised that Hong Kong had always been a “participant, contributor and beneficiary” in the course of national development.
