She said none of the “fancy” shampoos and conditioners formulated for thinning hair seemed to help.

As her hair loss worsened, she made a designated area in her shower to throw balls of loose strands and began to see her scalp.

“The amount of hair I was losing was very concerning and very abnormal for me,” she said on Reddit.

“I went for my yearly physical checkup (I go yearly but I guess I skipped a year) and my blood work said low vitamin D.

“At the same time, I got a bad covid haircut so started taking biotin to help it grow out in addition to tons of vitamin D.

“Literally in 3 weeks, I stopped losing hair!!!!”

She revealed that she had previously tried taking vitamin D, biotin, and collagen for hair care.

However, she didn’t see any improvement until she took the supplements consistently.

“The only thing I changed was how much vitamin D I was taking but I do think biotin may have helped some!” she said.

“I was taking biotin and collagen before but not consistently. I hope this will help someone also struggling with hair loss!”

She encouraged people to get their blood work done and to follow their doctor’s advice for treating any vitamin deficiencies.

BALDING BUDDIES

Many responses to the thread thanked the woman for sharing the beauty tip that worked for her.

“Oh my f**king god. Thank you,” one person wrote.

“I have been losing loads of hair lately and a month ago I was told I was low on vitamin D and that I needed to pick up supplements but have been pushing that off.

“I have been webmd and wondering if this is the sign of my imminent death or something.

“F**k. Ok. Tmrw I’m gonna take vitamin D.”

Tips for styling thinning hair

Rachael E. D Sey is a certified trichologist with almost 15,000 Instagram followers.

She revealed to The U.S. Sun how to protect hair from further loss.

Hairstyles

Sey recommended opting for a top knot or loosely braided ponytail over styles that tension strands.

She also advised to limit the use of heat tools such as a hair dryer or straightener.

Those who have afro hair, should avoid braids or consider larger braids.

DIY treatments

The trichologist said hair should be washed regularly and trimmed every six weeks.

She recommended using hair oils to help "improve scalp circulation and follicles."

“What?!?!?! You just made my life!” another said.

“I went for tests and everything and they just called and told me my vitamin D was low and called in supplements.

“They never told me it was the cause of my hair loss! I’ll never miss another dose! Thank you!!!”

“I've been taking biotin and my hairfall decreased a little. Might add vit. D as a supplement now thanks to your post!” a third wrote.

EXPERT OPINIONS

Vitamin D is “essential” to health and helps to create new hair follicles, according to Healthline.

A deficiency in the nutrient can cause hair loss and has been linked to alopecia.

Experts at the National Institutes of Health recommend having at least 600 IU (international units) or 15 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin D daily.

Gummy versions of the supplement are available at Walmart for $8.88.

The manufacturer recommends taking two of the gummies daily.

A biotin and collagen combo supplement is also sold at the grocery store for $9.22.

Two of the gummies should be taken daily with a meal.
