Angry customers said they couldn't pay at the tills, and company bosses admitted that most online shops would go undelivered.
Each of these issues has now since been resolved.
Below we reveal what's happened and how customers are affected.
Why are some Greggs stores closed?
The bakery giant is experiencing widespread technical problems which has led to stores being unable to process payments.
This has led to several shops across the UK being forced to shut their doors.
A spokesperson for Greggs told The Sun: "We are currently experiencing issues accepting payments in our shops.
"We are working to resolve this as soon as possible.”
The issues appear to have occurred this morning, starting at around 9am.
Signs have popped up in some store windows confirming the issue with areas affected including Newcastle, Westminster and Cardiff.
It's not clear as yet exactly which stores have been forced to close.
When will Greggs be back open?
Greggs is hoping to resolve the issue later today.
One customer said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that their local branch was closed, and posted a picture of a shop notice that read: “Shop will open late due to technical issues."
The chain said it is working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
It's a good idea to phone ahead to your local shop to check it's open and operating as normal before you head off for your morning sausage roll.
You can find your nearest branch using the store locator tool on the chain's website.
We'll update this story with the latest information on the outage and closures as we get it.
