A SAVVY mum has shared how she transformed her kitchen on a budget after the council took too long to get her a new one.
Council house tenant Lara Lear shared her DIY kitchen makeover via a video posted to her TikTok channel @laralear.
She often uses the account to post insights into her life as a stay at home mum.
Lara explained that the council had promised her a new kitchen, but after five years of waiting, she had had enough.
Her old kitchen was drab and plain, with no decorations or character.
Lara was determined to make her house feel like a home, so set about putting her DIY skills to the test.

She said: "I took matters into my own hands and made the kitchen into a space I enjoyed being in".
In the middle of the room, she added a giant wooden kitchen island which she got off Facebook Marketplace.
Beneath the table is a number of large handy shelves, so the island is great for storage space.
On one side of the room, Lara installed a wooden drinks shelf, which she bought from Ebay.
The shelf has space at the top to store drinks bottles and hooks on the bottom to hang wine glasses from.
She also replaced the white tiles behind the oven which she said stained easily with some funky patterned grey and white ones.
Lara's new kitchen looks very homely, and is decorated with house plants, pretty vases of flowers and inspirational quotes.
TikTok users raced to the video's comments section to share their thoughts on Lara's kitchen makeover.
One user said: "What a fabulous job you've done…and great taste too".
Another user said: "Fantastic job! Looks lush".
A third user said: "You did great".
Council tenants are allowed to make alterations and renovations to their homes.
However, they must make sure that any work conforms to building regulations and planning permission.
Council houses are provided by local authorities to those in need.

They are often cheaper than renting private housing and can also offer greater security from eviction.
Council houses are allocated to prospective tenants via a points based system, with those in greater need given homes first.
The council will contact you about an available property when you are high enough up the waiting list.
