Major supermarket closes 50 stores due to red weather warning issued as Storm Eowyn hits the UK

A MAJOR supermarket has said it will close 50 stores due to a red weather warning issued across the area.

Morrisons said 50 of its stores in the Scotland would close because of Storm Eowyn.

The stores across the region will be closed today, January 24, and no update has been provided on when they may reopen.

People in Scotland have been urged to stay indoors after the Met Office issued a red danger to life warning for wind.

The popular grocer is not the only retailer deciding to close because of the dangerous weather conditions.

M&S also told shoppers it would close all of its stores in Scotland and Ireland.

In a statement on X, formally known as Twitter, M&S said: "All 62 stores in these areas will remain closed during the red warning period."

Waterstones said its Edinburgh shops would also be closed today and encouraged shoppers to "stay safe".

Virgin Money also said customers planning to head to one of their branches today should check their store finder online to see if it is open.

It warned that branches could be closed because of the storm.

You can check if your local branch has been impacted by searching store finder on the Virgin Money website.

Tesco also been forced to close a number of stores in Scotland, and cancel home delivery orders.

Customers in areas including Ayrshire, Glasgow and Stirling previously recieved an email that their stores will be closed on Friday.

The supermarket giant urged shoppers to keep an eye on their website for opening times.

They also apologised for the inconvenience caused.

The email read: "Due to red weather warnings, and to ensure the safety of our colleagues and customers, Tesco stores in your area will be closed tomorrow, Friday 24 January.

"This means Home Delivery and Click+Collect orders scheduled for Friday from these stores will be cancelled.

"If you have a slot booked, we'll contact you to confirm next steps.
"Our stores will reopen when the red warning is lifted in your area and it’s safe to do so."

SUPERMARKETS SHUT UP SHOP

Sainsbury’s also said it will close its supermarkets and convenience stores in Scotland and Northern Ireland on Friday, 24 January 2025.

In Northern Ireland, all stores will be closed from 7am until 3pm.

In Scotland, stores within the most significantly impacted areas will be closed from 7am to 6pm.

Sainsbury's said stores will "reopen once it is safe to do so after the weather warning lifts".

All groceries online deliveries, on-demand services and Fast Track deliveries for Northern Ireland and Scotland will also be cancelled until conditions improve.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our colleagues and customers.
