My daughter called me a ‘hag’ as I won’t let her wear my wedding dress – she’s 5 sizes bigger than me & will ruin it
WHILST weddings are meant to be a celebration, they can often cause friction between loved ones – especially as they get close to the big day.
One mother-of-the-bride has been left heartbroken after falling out with her daughter over her choice of wedding dress.
Though most mums love to get involved in wedding prep, this Reddit user wasn’t so thrilled about her daughter, 20, revealing what she wanted.
Recalling the argument in the ‘Am I the A**hole’ subreddit, the proud mum explained that the bride-to-be was desperate to wear her gown.
Whilst this wouldn’t usually be a problem, the 45-year-old Redditor shared that she refused as the petite dress would have to be drastically altered.
“My daughter wouldn’t just borrow it either,” complained the original poster, adding: “She is much bigger than me and she just wants to use the fabric and alter it, irreversibly….she’s a size 14 and the dress is a 4.”

To make matters even worse, the gown had been a cherished family heirloom which has been lovingly made by the anonymous woman’s mother
Continuing, she wrote: “[That probably] makes me the ah…[it] is that it is something many women have done and it is a beautiful tradition.
“But for me, I just can’t. I love this dress. I was the one who designed it and my mother, who was an excellent seamstress made it for me [and] this is the last piece I have that she made.”
Sadly, the bride couldn’t understand why her mum was so sentimental about the dress and with only a few months until the big day, their relationship has broken down.
“Now she is angrily telling everyone that I am a cold-hearted hag who hates her,” the post read, with the woman also being criticised by her sister who claims that the dress isn’t worth making the bride ‘sad’.
Torn better keeping her daughter happy and saving her beloved dress, the woman admitted that she’d been upset people couldn’t understand her point of view.
Her post ended: ” I love my daughter to the moon and back but I don’t understand why she shouldn’t hear a no just because she’s getting married.
“Even if she was the right size and wouldn’t alter the dress, isn’t it odd not to respect other people’s property no matter if that is your mother.”
Almost immediately, the thread went viral with plenty of people shocked by the daughter’s response to the request.
One user pointedly wrote: “Your daughter sounds very young and unkind if she’s calling you names. She would remake your dress in a permanent way to fit her [but] it holds precious memories for you the way it is.”
They added: “She sounds like she might benefit from waiting to marry until she is more mature.”
I'm a tailor, and I was having an aneurysm, just trying to think how the daughter was going to have that dress altered"

Many others agreed, with another comparing the argument to a classic rom-com, saying: “I kept thinking of the movie 27 Dresses where the sister destroyed their mom's dress for bits and pieces then offered some scraps to her sister.”
“I'm a tailor, and I was having an aneurysm, just trying to think how the daughter was going to have that dress altered,” argued a third, adding: “And with the cost of manual labour, it's cheaper to just buy new fabric.”
The user then suggested that the mum pay for a seamstress to recreate the dress in her size, with the daughter then being able to adjust it to her liking.
Others suggested lending the twentysomething another heirloom for her big day, such as a veil or jewellery.

“Not saying her behaviour warrants any sort of reward, but I think it might be a nice gesture/olive branch to show you care and want her to have something of you on her big day,” explained a fourth.
With the wedding still a few months away, we hope that this bridezilla sees the error of her ways.
