Only around 56,000 of the E46 M3 model were ever made during a short production run between 2000 and 2006.

It could hit 62mph (100kmh) from a standing start in just 5.2 seconds and was unusual for its time in that you could shift gears either with the stick or paddles on the steering column.

This example is the ultra-limited CSL version, one of just 1,383 of its kind.

Only available in two colours, it is finished in a "Silver Grey" rather than "Black Sapphire" metallic shade.

The main feature of the CSL was a drastic weight reduction of about 7kg, combined with better aerodynamics to boost power output and downforce.

The model has a prestigious history in motorsport too, finishing third in the 2000 American Le Mans Series GT and winning the 24 hours of Nurburgring in 2004 and 2005.

Now, one of the few is being sold by luxury car dealer European Prestige.

The listing states: "The BMW M3 CSL (Coupe Sport Leichtbau) is a limited edition version of the E46-era M3, only produced for the 2004 model year.

"Only 1,383 examples were built, of which 422 were reserved for the UK market.

"A commemorative numbered plaque is mounted next to the handbrake lever."

Petrolheads urged to pick up £12k super saloon that's faster than a BMW M3

And the car certainly had its fans among petrolheads, including ex-Top Gear star Jeremy Clarkson.

Reviewing its sibling, the 135i M, for The Times, the Grand Tour host made reference to the M3 excellence.

He said: "The M3 is one of the most perfectly balanced machines ever created by man.

"It makes an F-16 fighter jet look ungainly and lumpen."

However, such a rarity doesn't come cheap, with the CSL listed on Prestige's site at a whopping £124,995.
