‘It’s too low cut and is giving maid lingerie’ people slam guest’s dress for ‘formal wedding’

WE all know basic wedding attire rules like not wearing white or upstaging the bride, but it can still be hard to know what to wear.

Even the safest outfit choices might come under fire, with one woman receiving a major backlash after revealing what she wanted to wear to a formal wedding.

Like many wedding guests, the woman had opted for what she thoughy was a classic black dress for an upcoming wedding.

With a romantic sweetheart neckline, slightly puffed skirt and delicate frills, it would have been an easy-to-go-to wedding outfit.

Still unsure whether she’d hit the mark, the attendee decided to ask for people’s opinion on Reddit and the internet did not hold back.

Posting a photo of the stunning House of CB dress on the r/Weddingattireapproval, she explained: “I've been eyeing this dress but I want to know if it's too much for a wedding guest to wear. Never been to a wedding before.”

Whilst most of us would have said her dress was a relatively safe option, one user compared it to a ‘maid outfit’ because of the small white frill.

“It looks like sexy maid cosplay. I don’t think its formal attire,” they pointedly wrote, with others agreeing.

Another complained: “It's not the length that's the problem, it's the white lace peeking out and visible underwire/corset that combined with the black silky fabric [that] makes it look like underwear.”

Some also had a problem with the dress length and argued that the midi length was too low cut for a religious ceremony.

“If it's in a church, cover that cleavage for the ceremony,” argued a third, with a fourth sating: “I wouldn’t have been cool with it if someone showed up in black to my wedding.”

Among the complaints though, several people argued that they were a fan of the retro style dress and complimented the Redditor’s style choice – especially as they hadn’t been to a wedding before.

“People in this sub are ridiculous like what is the demographic here? Immediately when I saw this picture I was like wow I love this dress and I want it for myself,” commented one fan, saying: “This dress would have been perfect for the 5 formal weddings I went to in 2023.”

A fifth user questioned what the thread would have made of her outfit, after revealing she wore a similar length gown to her brother’s wedding.

She said: “When I was a bridesmaid I wore a (not) A line silk pleated dress that wasn’t floor length for my brother’s formal wedding. I wonder what this sub would think lol.”

They added: “Never mind the fact that people are calling this dress ‘too close to lingerie’.”

“Honestly it's a super cute beautiful dress and it looks gorgeous on everyone. I'd be tempted to get it too haha,” quipped a sixth.

Whilst Reddit might not agree about the dress, we just hope the bride appreciates all the effort this guest is going to.
