England inject youth for West Indies tour after dismal Cricket World Cup

England have rung the changes for their men’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean in December, with Jos Buttler one of six survivors from a disappointing World Cup campaign to feature in the ODI leg.

While not every player to miss out has necessarily had the red pen put through their name for good - Rob Key, team director, was due to explain the thinking on Sunday - it still represents a break from the recent past and an injection of youth in the white-ball set-up.

There are three ODIs against West Indies, with Buttler, Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse and - more surprisingly, given their returns - Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone among those about to leave India after finishing seventh in the World Cup.

The T20 squad offers a nod towards planning for that format’s World Cup next June, with Buttler, Atkinson and Brook again featuring, along with Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid from this recent campaign.

Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood are absent from both squads - something which reflects a need to rest before the Test tour of India that starts in January. Joe Root, who seldom features in T20, is also absent from the 50-over squad, while Ben Stokes was always down to miss the tour due to knee surgery.

Dawid Malan’s absence from both squads is something of a curio, the 36-year-old having been one of the rare players to find form in India and having just signed a new one-year central contract.
