The huge new role will mean he will not only have control of Coronation Street, but Emmerdale too.

It comes after Jane Hudson recently stepped down from her role as executive producer.

Speaking about the new gig, Iain said: “I am beyond delighted to be stewarding two shows that I - along with the whole nation - absolutely love.

"They hold such a central role in viewers’ lives and working with the immensely talented teams on either side of the Pennines to cement their position as the best soaps on the telly will be a massive thrill
and a privilege.

"I have been honing my skills in producer roles for the past decade and I am brimming with ideas for what the next chapter on each show will look like - I can’t wait to get started!”

Iain has been the boss of the Weatherfield-based soap since 2018 when he replaced Kate Oates.

He will report to John Whiston, the Managing Director of Continuing Drama.

Iain is responsible for Sinead Tinker’s tragic cancer diagnosis and marriage to Daniel Osbourne, the introduction of the Bailey family and how Nina and Seb became embroiled in a vicious hate crime.

Coronation Street fans have been left fuming by the move, with one fan saying he "should be sacked" instead of promoted.

One said: "Why does this happen all the time. People who've not been good in a role are promoted rather than got rid of."

A second wrote: "Why in God’s name would they do this? Corrie is already absolutely dire."

"He needs to be sacked not promoted. Corrie had its lowest ratings in years on Xmas day - under his control. Not good news for the soaps at all," said a third.

While a fourth commented: "So his eras at both shows are universally hated by audiences… so ITV gives him even greater control over them? Bizarre."

During his time at the helm, Iain won a BAFTA for Best Soap and Continuing Drama in 2022, two Best Serial Drama Awards at the National Television Awards in 2019 and 2020.
