The European Union will impose further sanctions on Iran, targeting its drone and missile production, European Council President Charles Michel said after the body met in Brussels. “We feel it’s very important to do everything to isolate Iran,” he said. ‘The countries in the region know that Iran is a threat, not only for Israel.”
The Biden administration said it plans to push the Israeli government for a full investigation into a U.N. report alleging that detainees in Gaza were abused by Israel Defense Forces personnel, including “severe physical beatings and treatment akin to waterboarding” and attacks by dogs.
About 37 communities in the West Bank were affected by Israeli settler violence between April 9 and 15, triple the number in the previous week, according to the U.N. humanitarian affairs office. At least two Palestinians were killed in a settler attack over the weekend, after a 14-year-old Israeli shepherd went missing and was later found dead. About 450 Palestinians and nine Israelis have been killed in the West Bank since Oct. 7, the office said.
At least 33,899 people have been killed and 76,664 injured in Gaza since the war began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but says the majority of the dead are women and children.
Israel estimates that about 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack, including more than 300 soldiers, and says 260 soldiers have been killed since its military operation in Gaza began.
