Where has it snowed in the UK?

In January 2024, the Met Office warned "disruptive" snow will make it "bitterly cold" for Brits.

According to the Met Office: ‘’The UK is now in the grip of a cold plunge of Arctic air which has moved in from the north across the whole of the country.’’

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place across Scotland, much of northern England, and parts of North Wales until midnight.

The warnings continue across large swathes of the northern half of the country until Thursday.

Much of the country will be dusted with frost or blanketed with snow and ice - sparking misery on the roads and railways.

Drivers have been warned of difficult driving conditions, with authorities warning motorists to plan ahead, while some rural communities have been warned they could be temporarily cut off.

Schools across the UK were also forced to close once more today (January 16) due to heavy snow and plummeting temperatures.

Here we take a look at where it has snowed in the UK.

National Highways has put in place a severe weather alert for snow affecting the North West today (Tuesday, January 16).

Photos show Brits braving the freezing temperatures - with snow blanketing much of Manchester and Liverpool.

Even the water in Trafalgar Square, London, has frozen over as temperatures plunged below zero overnight.

Snow and ice warnings are currently in place for most of northern England.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick said that temperatures will be about 5C to 6C lower than usual for this time of year.

A yellow snow and ice warning is also in force for Scotland.

Forecasters predict Northern Scotland could see a whopping 20cm of snowfall.

Northern and eastern parts of Scotland saw the "bulk of the snow" on Monday, with 15cm on the ground at Aberdeen Airport by the evening.

These conditions saw around 200 schools across Aberdeenshire, Moray, and Shetland closed at the start of the week.

On January 16, more than 50 remained shut, with others elsewhere in Scotland opening later than normal.

Chief Superintendent Hilary Sloan, Police Scotland's head of road policing, said: "Our advice is to plan ahead and consider if your journey is really necessary during this latest spell of severe weather or if it can be delayed until conditions improve.

"If you absolutely have to travel, please drive to the conditions, be prepared for delays, and allow extra time for your journey.

"Please don't drive through road closures, the decision to close roads is not taken lightly and is done for public safety.’’

Northern Ireland was also under alert until 11am, with similar warnings covering the same areas continuing into Thursday.

In an update from the Met Office, the forecaster took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote: ‘’Yellow weather warning issued.

‘’Ice across Northern Ireland. Tuesday 1700-2359.’’

According to the Met Office, several yellow warnings are in force across Wales.

While the Met Office had already issued yellow weather warnings covering today and for four days straight it has now extended the areas affected on Wednesday and Thursday.

Previously, for both those days the area affected stretched across northern Scotland to Northern Ireland and then down the west coast as far as south-west Wales.

Now, a mixture of sleet, snow, and ice could also cause travel disruption in northern England from midnight on Wednesday until noon the same day, the Met Office has warned.

On the positive side, south-west Wales is no longer expected to be hit.

Will the snow settle?

Sadly for some, the snow does not always settle.

Images being shared on various social media platforms show that the snow has settled in a number of places across the UK.

Tonight, frequent snow showers are predicted to continue in northern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Clear skies are expected elsewhere with a widespread severe frost.

It is important to note that sleet and snow clearing can lead to an increased ice risk.

Where does it snow most in the UK?

According to the Met Office, Scotland sees the most snow in the UK.

Data has revealed snow or sleet falls on 38.1 days on average.

The weather station which recorded the most snowfall in the UK was the Cairngorm Chairlift, with snow falling on 76.2 days throughout the year (based on 1981-2010 averages).
