Plane carrying 62 people crashes in Brazil

A passenger plane carrying 62 people crashed near São Paulo on Friday, according to the airline and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The Brazilian airline Voepass said in a statement that there was no information immediately available about the condition of the 58 passengers and four crew members aboard Flight 2283 from Cascavel, Brazil, to São Paulo.

At a public appearance Friday, Lula called for a moment of silence, saying he was the bearer of “some very bad news.” He said that a plane crashed in the outskirts of São Paulo and that it appeared everyone aboard died.

The plane crashed near Vinhedo, a city in the state of São Paulo. Video showed smoke billowing in the area.
