Three at-home experiments to educate and entertain the kids with for Science Week
IT’S Science Week, so time to experiment with your kids to help them learn.
There are plenty of easy at-home activities to try.
Carrie Ann Booth from “edutainment” provider The Science Booth shares three ideas . . .
SKITTLE SAUCER: Diffusion is the random movement of particles from a region of high concentration to one of low concentration.
You can show kids how it works by arranging Skittles in a circle on a white plate.
Then pour cold water in the middle of the circle until all the sweets are partially sub-merged.

Wait and watch as the food colouring diffuses in the water, creating a pattern.
GURGLING LAVA LAMP: Oil is less dense than water, so the two do not mix. You can use this fact to create a lava lamp.
Pour water into a clean jar until about a third full.
Then add ten drops of food colouring and vegetable or any other food oil — leaving about 3cm space at the top of the jar.
Finally, add half an effervescent tablet (£1.99 for a 20-pack at Boots), which will make tiny bubbles.
When the bubbles pop, the coloured blobs will sink to the bottom of the jar.
GLOWING BOUNCY EGG: Use a UV torch, about £5 from Amazon, to demon-strate different light frequencies.
Put a raw egg in a glass of distilled vinegar and leave for 24 hours to dissolve the shell, then rinse the egg in water and rub away any leftover shell.
Break open a highlighter pen and remove the ink pad then squeeze as much of the ink as you can into the glass of vinegar before popping the egg back in.
After another 24 hours, rinse your egg and turn off the lights — and use the UV torch to see it glow.
You can also drop the egg from a small height and you should see it bounce without breaking.
