He grew up in San Diego, California.
While attending the University of Southern California, McCary lived with his childhood friend, comedian, and former SNL cast member Kyle Mooney.
From 2013 to 2019, McCary worked as a segment director for Saturday Night Live.
McCary is also known for being the co-founder of the sketch comedy group Good Neighbor alongside Mooney, Beck Bennett, and Nick Rutherford.
In 2017, he directed the comedy-drama movie Brigsby Bear, produced by The Lonely Island.
