In a Reddit forum, one Coronation Street viewer posted the topic: "Do the writers hate pregnant women?"

They wrote: "I can't think when there was a baby last born to the street? Was it Abbie with Alfie? So far I can think that they've ended the pregnancies of Sarah, Summer, Faye (I know it wasn't ever a pregnancy), Elina, Maria (although a while ago).

"Has anyone other than Abbie has a baby in recent years? It seems like they haven't done a pregnancy storyline where an actual baby is born and we know about the pregnancy in years.

"I really did not care about Abbie having Alfie who then just disappeared like most other Corrie children."

Another Corrie fan replied: "How "recent" are we talking? Because you might be able to sneak The Quads or Glory in there."

However, others were glad of the baby break, with one replying: "Baby stories always bore me - usually they are attached to really bad ideas by writers.... Ivy over on Emmerdale is a good example."

Another added: "I think they hit us with too many for a while, then it was a s***load of failed pregnancy or termination storylines, and now I'm glad for the break from the subject."

A fellow viewer responded: "I hate pregnancy storylines and I don’t think we need more tiny people. There’s already Bertie, the quads, glory, Harry and Abby’s child.

"The toddlers and younger kids are terrible actors (understandably) so every scene they are in is spoiled. And every time they aren’t in the scene but their parents are it seems unrealistic.

"The character either becomes shackled to the child or they appear to have forgotten they have a child."

Coronation Street shock as Abi Franklin gives birth on the road after drugs binge

Meanwhile another pointed out why the show's writers might be taking a break from pregnancy storylines, writing: "Also, Abi’s pregnancy with Alfie was about as traumatic as possible lol.

"She was grieving, mentally unwell and on drugs the whole time, it was the result of an ill advised one night stand/affair, she was in denial about the fact she was pregnant until she went into labour alone in the middle of nowhere, she tried to abandon the baby, a custody battle ensued…

"Maybe a straightforward pregnancy wouldn’t make for good television but it would be nice to see someone just have a kid under normal circumstances. Parenthood itself is interesting and dramatic enough surely?"
