What to know about India’s election, the world’s biggest democratic event
The ruling party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are vying for a third term after a decade in power. They are hoping for a mandate that surpasses their already spectacular performance in 2019, when the party took 303 of the 543 seats — far beyond the 272 needed to rule. They are hoping to maintain their stronghold in the north and make new inroads in the east and south. Results will be announced on Tuesday.
