  • Scotland had 'terrible' start but can make knockout stages, says Hutton

Alan Hutton has backed Scotland to make it to the knockout stages despite their 5-1 mauling against Germany in their opening game.

Hutton, who played 50 times for Scotland, told  Best Online Poker Sites: “There’s no getting away from it, it was a terrible, terrible start to the Euros for Scotland losing 5-1 in the opening game against Germany.

"And I’m not going to lie, I thought Switzerland would be the easier game of the two left for Scotland but then I watched them against Hungary and it doesn’t seem to be the case!

"They looked really good moving forwards and had some decent counter attacks – they look the more dangerous side at this moment in time, so it’s going to be tough for Scotland.

“But the way it stands at the moment, if Scotland can get a draw against Switzerland, which I think they are capable of doing, and leave it until the last game against Hungary where they need a win – and I back them to beat Hungary – four points should be enough for them to reach the last 16."

  • England have secret formula to stop players cramping

England have a remedy to get their players out of a pickle when cramping up.

Gareth Southgate’s squad are being given pickle juice to fight the fatigue frustration - as it is said to solve the issue 40 per cent faster than drinking water.

Full-back Kieran Trippier, 33, was given pickle juice when cramping up in the latter stages of Sunday’s 1-0 win over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen, as well as a high-carb drink referred to as a “fuel bomb”.

Pickle juice is regularly used in tennis and contains sodium, potassium and vinegar.

When consumed, a reflex in the mouth is sparked, sending a signal to stop muscles from cramping.

  • Gallas tips Portugal as team to beat

Former Chelsea star William Gallas has backed Portugal to go "very far" at the Euros.

Speaking to Prime Casino, he said: "When I look at all the teams, the team that looks really strong is Portugal.

"Portugal have a brilliant squad of players. When you look at the players, even the guys that are going to be on the bench, most of them play for the biggest clubs in Europe.

"They all have experience of playing in the biggest matches. Portugal have a great mix of players, and even the younger ones are experienced when it comes to playing in pressure games.

"Cristiano is still there. He still wants to win one more big competition before he's going to retire. He still wants to show the world that he can compete on the biggest stages with the best players.

"He has a manager in Roberto Martinez that is on his side and seems to be able to bring the best out of him. I think Portugal will go very, very far in the competition. I think they can win it."

  • England desperate for Luke Shaw return, says Cole

Carlton Cole has said urged Gareth Southgate to get Luke Shaw playing again as soon as he is able to.

Shaw's selection was a gamble due to his fitness, and he is the only natural LB in the squad.

His absence was sorely felt against Serbia as England lacked any real thrust down the left, and Cole reckons Shaw's inclusion can fix this.

Speaking to Gambling.com, he said: "We’ve seen him (Gareth Southgate) do that in the warm up games but I’m not a fan of it. Luke Shaw couldn’t come back any sooner for me…

"You saw some parts of the game and you think to yourself if we are playing against a better team, some of those defensive mistakes might get punished.

"Against Denmark I would personally go for Luke Shaw instead of Kieran Trippier, if Shaw is fit.

"I would have told Trippier before the tournament that I’m gonna need you for that first game but Shaw is going to be fit for the next few games and I need to give him some minutes in his natural position to give the team more balance.

However, I don’t think Southgate needs to chop and change the team too much, the left back position is the only one I think needs rejigging.”

  • Foden should keep spot against Denmark, says Cole

Former Premier League ace Carlton Cole has called on Gareth Southgate to keep faith with Phil Foden.

The Man City star was far from his best against Serbia, but Cole believes England will be better off not rocking the apple cart at this stage.

Speaking to Gambling.com, he said: "I wouldn’t chop and change the team too much as I wouldn’t want to upset the apple cart at this stage.

"It would be harsh to drop Foden after one game when he is trying to get going in the tournament, particularly after a winning start.

"I would give Foden another half vs Denmark to show what he can do and then you can bring on Anthony Gordon if his performance hasn’t improved.

"Gordon is a good player to bring on in the second half at some stage and change the game.

"Foden had a quiet first game and we need to see more from him going forward but if this doesn’t happen, Gordon has to be considered to take his place on the left."

  • Denmark preparing for England clash with BBQ

Denmark are in the mood to grill England - after relaxing at a team barbeque evening.

Kasper Hjulmand’s side were savaged back home after their opening 1-1 draw with Slovenia.

Now they have the chance to claim revenge for the Euro 2020 semi-final defeat at Wembley, won by Harry Kane’s rebound goal after a controversial penalty awarded after Raheem Sterling went down in the box in extra-time.

And defender Jannik Vestergaard revealed the Danes had put themselves in the mood to get their teeth into the Three Lions with a mountain-top surf and turf night.

Leicester centre-back Vestergaard said: “We all went up the mountain from the hotel, the players and the staff, together.

“It was a change of scene, and it's sometimes very nice when we've been together for a few weeks.

“Of course it was still the same faces, and we were on a trip up the mountain, so it wasn't far away.

“But it was good for us to do something different.”

  • UPDATE: Mbappe UNLIKELY to face Netherlands

Kylian Mbappe is unlikely to face the Netherlands in France's crunch Group D clash on Friday.

The French captain, 25, suffered a broken nose against Austria on Monday night following a collision with defender Kevin Danso.

France's medical team are quickly having a mask made for their talisman in order to get him back playing - though he is not expected to be available for Friday's game in Leipzig.

With both Les Bleus and the Netherlands having won their opening games it is effectively a shootout for top spot in Group D.

There is some hope the Real Madrid-bound forward will return for their final group game vs Poland.

  • Serbia star OUT of Euros after England injury

Serbia star Filip Kostic is out of the Euros after damaging knee ligaments against England.

The Juventus star, 31, came off in the first half of Sunday’s 1-0 defeat in Gelsenkirchen after a challenge with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Scans have shown the injury is not as bad as the anterior cruciate ligament rupture that was feared.

But Kostic has done enough damage to his knee ligaments to keep him out for the next three to four weeks at least - meaning his Euros is over.

The wing-back was formerly a target for West Ham before he joined Juventus from Eintracht Frankfurt two summers ago.

Kostic also received a shoulder barge from England star Jude Bellingham in the first half of Sunday’s clash - the image of which went viral.

  • Croatia forced to send home winger

Croatia have suffered another Euro 2024 blow as star midfielder Nikola Vlasic was ruled OUT of the tournament.

Torino attacking schemer Vlasic suffered a thigh injury in the final weeks of the Serie A season but was selected by coach Zlatko Dalic in the hope he would be fit.

Vlasic, 26, was an unused substitute as the World Cup semi-finalists crashed 3-0 to Spain in their opening game.

But now Dalic has revealed he aggravated the injury in training and has been sent home.

In a statement, the Croatian FA confirmed: “Vlasic suffered the injury during training and underwent an MRI with doctor Sasa Jankovic, which revealed a small muscle tear.”

Dalic said: “Nikola invested a lot of effort and energy to help the national team at the Euro and that's why I'm very sorry about this muscle injury he suffered.

“We consciously accepted a certain risk because we had an expanded squad with 26 players.

“Nikola is an integral part of this team. He wanted to be part of the team at the big competition.

“Unfortunately, another injury happened and I can only thank Nikola for his great effort and wish him a speedy recovery and that he returns to the field at his best.”
