Labour to put crack squad of economy experts in Whitehall if they win election

A SQUAD of economic experts will be put at the heart of Whitehall if Labour seizes power — to get Britain booming.

Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves is plotting to beef up a Treasury unit set up by the last Labour government.

Officials from the Enterprise and Growth Unit will be integrated into the budget and spending review process in a bid to bolster prosperity.

In a speech to the City of London’s banking and finance community tomorrow night, Ms Reeves will promise a “new chapter in Britain’s economic history”.

She will vow to “reject managed decline” and drive growth by bringing together the private and public sector.

Ms Reeves will say: “I remain an optimist about our ability to rise to the challenges we face.

“If we can bring together public and private sectors, in a national mission - directed at restoring strong economic growth across Britain.

“And unlike the 1980s, growth in the years to come must be broad-based, inclusive and resilient.”

Her remarks come as Labour are 20-points ahead in the polls and warring Tory MPs are plotting to unseat Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

George Osborne delivered the same lecture just a few months before the 2010 election where he became Chancellor.
