Officers said there were no signs of assault on her body.

Her body was taken to the Koh Phangan Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Police Lieutenant Pongnaphat Somboon of the Koh Phangan Police Station said: "We believe the cause of death was drowning. We will call the British Embassy to notify her relatives."

Authorities said the tourist had been staying at a nearby bungalow for around a month.

She was due to check out on June 11, a day after the island's infamous drug-riddled Full Moon Party popular with tourists.

Police Lieutenant Pongnaphat added: "We do not believe there is anything suspicious but CCTV images will be checked to ensure that the death was accidental."

Drownings are a recurring safety concern in Thailand, especially in tourist hotspots like Phuket, Pattaya, and Krabi.

The deaths are often attributed to strong rip currents, lack of swimming skills, and disregard for warning signs.

The waters are most dangerous during the country's rainy monsoon season, when red flags are placed in beaches to warn of dangerous sea conditions.

The Full Moon Party is an all-night beach party on the island of Koh Phangan.

The party takes place on the night of every full moon and is usually attended by thousands of backpackers.

However, the event has become a notorious celebration filled with cheap drink and drugs.

With cannabis now legal on the island, magic mushrooms, kratom, methamphetamine and LSD are also widely available.

The Sun has approached the FCDO for comment.

In December, a British tourist was found dead on the steps of a 7-Eleven following one of the debauched parties.

The 37-year-old had reportedly downed cheap shots before trying to find his way home from the raucous beach event.

But the holidaymaker was found dead on the steps of a 7-Eleven store shortly after 6.30am the next morning next to an opened plastic water bottle.
