I’m an interior designer – these 5 things are making your home tacky… people don’t realise neutral colours clash too

AN INTERIOR designer has warned against five design choices that are actually ruining the vibe of your home - and some border on tacky.

Kelly Hoppen described her “pet hates” as “an absolute no in the home”, with popular cushion hacks and neutral colours potentially making your space look naff.

The 64-year-old has over 45 years of experience in the industry, having appeared on numerous interior design shows to share her wisdom.

She has worked with the likes of David and Victoria Beckham, Elton John and Gwyneth Paltrow, as well as having written several books on interior design and lifestyle.

So, if you’re going to listen to anyone’s opinions on how to make your home look nice, it’s going to be her.

Taking to TikTok, Kelly slammed five popular design choices that she thinks are “absolute nos”.

The first thing she shunned was mixed-colour flowers.

This was swiftly followed by her slamming “chopped” cushions.

Chopped cushions refers to creating a dip in the middle of the cushion using your arm - a bedroom staple loved by Kim and Khloe Kardashian

“My pet hate is chopped cushions,” Kelly said.

“Never chop a cushion.

“A cushion needs to be straight, straight on and never at an angle.”

Similarly, Kelly despises furniture at an angle and believes most pieces are “never designed” that way.

“Unless it’s in a corner, always have things straight,” she recommended.

“They can be off-centre together, but never at an angle.”

The interior designer also hates real fur throws, and believes faux fur lends itself to aesthetics just as well.

But perhaps the most interesting of her “pet hates” is “people getting neutral colours wrong”.

“Just because they’re neutral, they can actually clash,” Kelly claimed.

“Make sure that your neutral colours work - only choose three to put together at one time until you get it right.”
