I transformed my tatty kitchen into a little slice of heaven for less than £100 – the breakfast bar only cost a tenner

A DIY whizz has shared how she transformed her “tatty” kitchen into a room of modern bliss for less than £100.

Savvy Melissa shunned no material or resource during the renovation, even finding use for an old wardrobe door to bring her vision to life.

With the cost of living crisis pinching Britain’s purses, more and more homeowners are opting for DIY renovations.

And in many cases, you can totally overhaul a room without needing to smash through walls or rip up flooring.

Melissa’s jaw-dropping kitchen transformation is proof of that.

She appeared on Channel 5’s Your Dream Kitchen For Less to showcase her home transformation.

“I decided to update it because it was looking really old, tired and tatty,” Melissa, from Northampton, said.

“I decided to keep the cabinets that were already here.

“I bought some furniture paint and upcycled them.

“Then I added a couple of gold handles, all for the grand total of £26.”

To bring the walls to life with just a £30 budget, Melissa stuck vinyl sheets with a paisley pattern over the original tiles.

She purchased three rolls at £10 each, which she says “just stuck straight on to the old tiles”.

To avoid any peeling, Melissa blasted the vinyl with a hairdryer so the adhesive could bind to the original tiles.

She didn’t stop there, though.

Melissa managed to create a breakfast bar area in the tiny kitchen for just £10… using a WARDROBE door.

She was desperate for an area to sit and eat, so used a small patch of “wasted space” to execute her vision.

The homemaker glazed over the wardrobe door with paint to give it a “vinyl look” before adding legs to stabilise it in the ground and secure it against the wall.

Brits were estimated to spend a whopping £38.7 billion on DIY projects in 2023.
