Coronation Street fans livid as classic episode airs most ‘iconic’ fight ever – but ‘cuts it to ribbons’ with major edit

CORONATION Street fans have been left livid after the show re-edited the soap's most iconic fight ever during a classic episode broadcast.

ITV3 regularly air re-runs of years gone by of the popular show and soap fans were left chomping at the bit to realise the time had rolled around for the broadcast of one of the most memorable Cobbles moments ever.

The drama was all thanks to long-running characters Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and Gail Platt (Helen Worth).

The two warring women went hell for leather in a dramatic street brawl that saw them tearing shreds out of one another.

Eileen and Gail's epic fight caused Todd Grimshaw's, then played by Bruno Langley, sexuality exposed after he had been caught cheating on Gail's daughter Sarah with another man.

Todd had been planning to marry Sarah and were even expecting a child after he suggested they become parents.

Aged just 16, it was Sarah's second pregnancy and had not been without its complications.

However, it send her into a tailspin after realsing that Todd was gay.

Todd realised he had confusion surrounding his sexuality when he built up a friendship with Sarah's brother Nick.

Having tried to kiss him, and been rejected, Todd soon turned his attention to nurse Karl Foster and began an affair with him.

Of learning at how he had betrayed Sarah, Gail flew into a rage which began the decades-long, and still ongoing, feud between the two cobbles matriachs.

However, as fans sat down to tune into the "iconic" episode, they were left stunned to realise the programme had undergone a major re-edit.

Coronation Street's Fred Elliot played by John Savident falls down a sinkhole

A section of Gail's dialogue appeared to have been cut, likely due to sensitivity concerns.

At one point during the heated row, Gail furiously exclaimed at Eileen: "Because that's the only chance of a grandchild that you are gonna get off that pervert."

It leads to Eileen slapping Gail around the face for referring to Todd as a "pervert" before the brawl steps up a gear.

However, when it was broadcast on ITV3 and uploaded to ITVX, "off that pervert" was axed.

Elsewhere, another use of the word "pervert" was cut as well as Gail saying of Sarah: "At leash she's normal."

Show bosses also decided to cut Gail referring to Todd going after another of her sons when she said: “And David come to that, is he next on your list?”

It is likely the show was re-edited due to sensitivity concerns and Gail's likening of Todd being a "pervert" due to the fact he is gay.

The Sun has contacted a spokesperson for Coronation Street for comment.

Unhappy that show bosses had chopped and changed around with the scene, one fan said: "They cut it to ribbons, @ITVX you vastly underestimate your audience."

They then added: "We don’t need this mollycoddling. I don’t think any of this would even be cut from current episodes if the same dialogue were repeated.

"Please stop doing this @ITVX."
