He looked to be embarking on his journey home from Australia.

More on Sam Thompson

An overjoyed Sam exclaimed: "I’M COMING HOME!!!! I only just got my phone back this morning, and I don’t quite know where to begin, but I want to start first of all by saying thank you.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart, there aren’t quite the words to describe how grateful I am for each and everyone of you who supported me during my time in the jungle."

Sam went on to explain how winning the show was a "dream", gushing: "You made a young boys dream (now slightly older) come true, and I will never ever forget that.

"When I first stepped foot in that jungle, I didn’t know what to expect, and I was a bit nervous about whether I was going to make myself look like a d**k as I know I’m a bit full on especially when there’s a lot of people and energy around at all times."

He went on to say: "I had no idea of all the support, love and kindness that you all showed me, and reading some of your comments and messages, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude!!!

Sam signed off the heart-warming post with: "Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!!! I have more people to thank, and a couple more soppy posts, but my first thank you had to be to all of you. I Love you."

The message was met with an outpouring of fans and famous friends alike.

Girlfriend, Zara McDermott, praised Sam in the comment section, writing: "PROUD DOESNT EVEN CUT IT!!!! Now tell that pilot to put his foot on the gas please."

EastEnders actress and former I'm A Celeb alumni Jacqueline Jossa penned: "You smashed it!"

Radio host and Strictly It Takes two presenter Fleur East, who previously competed in the jungle, commented: "What a dude! Said you were winning before you even left the UK! Can’t wait to debrief with you. Safe journey."

Love Island host and colleague Maya Jama simply chimed in: "Our 👑 ❤️."

One fan explained how watching Sam had impacted them, stating: "I can't thank you enough for the impact on my little Sam, he's 10 and has adhd and doesn't stop grinning when you're on screen. He finally has an example of how he can be. That's just immeasurable. Really, thank you."

Sam's best mate Pete Wicks went Down Under in Zara's place and the two men had an emotional reunion on the bridge.
