Can I charge my phone in an electric car?

Nationwide Vehicle Contracts looked into the issue and told us that you can charge your phone in an electric car.

Charging your phone in a car doesn't consume much energy, so you don't have to worry about stopping with no power in the middle of the road.

The motor experts further told us that electric cars have an eco-mode driver setting which helps increase the EV's efficiency.

Your phone won't charge up as quickly because the eco-mode limits the amount of power emitted to electric systems mode, limiting some of the other functions in the car.

Here are some of the ways you can charge your phone in an electric car:

  1. USB Ports: Many electric cars have USB ports that allow you to plug in your phone's charging cable directly.
  2. Wireless Charging: Some newer models of electric cars offer wireless charging pads. If your phone supports wireless charging, you can simply place it on the charging pad to charge.
  3. 12V Outlet (Cigarette Lighter Socket): Like traditional cars, electric cars often have a 12V outlet where you can plug in a car charger adapter.
  4. AC Outlets: Some electric cars come with standard AC power outlets, which can be used with a regular phone charger.

The user manual for your car will provide details on the available charging options and how to use them.

Will charging my phone drain the car's battery?

It will take your phone a long time for it to drain your car's battery.

If you compare an iPhone 12, which has a battery back of 10.7Wh to a Tesla Model 3 which has a battery pack of 57,500WH, it clearly indicates that there is no way for the battery to drain.

WhichEV calculated that you can charge an iPhone 12 from 0 to 100% almost 5,400 times with the Tesla Model 3's battery.

They further analysed, that for the Tesla's battery to drop by 1%, the iPhone 12 needs to be charged over 54 times.

Charging your phone in an electric car is perfectly fine and will not significantly drain the car's battery.

It’s a convenient feature that electric cars are well-equipped to handle without impacting overall performance or range.

Will charging my phone reduce the car's power?

As charging your phone won't drain the battery, it won't reduce the power of your EV either.

If you compare the energy levels of a mobile phone and an electric car, as we already did, you'll see that EVs are way more powerful.

They will not be affected by charging a mobile phone which takes a tiny bit of energy from it.

Electric cars are made to be more sustainable, and so that didn't only come in their electric components.

Their light weight also makes them faster, hence they use fewer resources and so are more sustainable.

So you have another adding factor which is helping your EV move at a faster speed, which your phone will not have control over.
